Yes. Wallpapers, the clock, your shortcuts, and widgets like notes and the to-do list all work without an internet connection. Only optional features you turn on, like the Weather widget or Google sign-in, need a network request.

This happens automatically whenever an update adds a new permission, it is a Chrome security feature, not a bug or anything wrong with your install. Open chrome://extensions, find the extension, and click "Details" (or the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar) to review and re-enable it. Your settings, wallpapers, and widget content are untouched while it is disabled.

It personalizes the greeting with your name and profile picture, and, if you have the calendar widget on, automatically shows today's real events from your Google Calendar (read-only) alongside anything you've entered manually. Your profile info and calendar data are read directly by your browser and are never sent to the developer.

Only read access, and only to fetch today's events for the calendar widget. Nothing is ever added, changed, or deleted on your calendar.

No, signing in is entirely optional. Every wallpaper, widget, and customization works the same with or without it, including adding calendar events by hand instead of syncing Google Calendar.

Chrome is the officially supported and tested browser. Edge has been manually verified to work (new tab, clock, wallpaper, and search all render correctly). Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, and other Chromium-based browsers are expected to work since they share the same extension platform, but they aren't independently tested, so treat that as best-effort rather than guaranteed. Google sign-in specifically is the one feature most likely to need its own per-browser setup; every other feature is unaffected.
