Getting started
What does this extension actually do?
It replaces Chrome's new-tab page with a rotating HD wallpaper from Makoto Shinkai's films (Your Name, Weathering With You, Suzume, and more), with a clock, search bar, shortcuts, and optional widgets layered quietly on top.
Why did my new tab change after installing it?
Chrome lets extensions take over the new-tab page directly, by design, that's the whole point of this extension. You'll see the change the next time you open a new tab. You can always remove the extension to get the default new tab back.
How do I install it?
Open the Chrome Web Store listing and click "Add to Chrome." See the install guide for a step-by-step walkthrough and what each permission is for.
How do I remove it?
Right-click the extension's icon in Chrome's toolbar (or visit chrome://extensions) and choose Remove. Chrome's default new tab comes back immediately, and everything the extension stored locally is deleted with it.
Privacy and data
Does the extension track me or collect my data?
No. There are no analytics, no tracking, and no ads. Everything is stored locally in your own browser. See the full privacy policy for exactly what is stored and why.
What are all those permissions for?
Each one is explained in plain language on the install guide and the privacy policy. In short: saving your settings, filling empty shortcut tiles, sending searches to your own search engine, and (optionally) Google sign-in.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Wallpapers, the clock, your shortcuts, and widgets like notes and the to-do list all work without an internet connection. Only optional features you turn on, like the Weather widget or Google sign-in, need a network request.
Wallpapers and customization
Can I limit the wallpapers to specific films?
Yes. Open the extension's settings and choose exactly which films you want in rotation, anywhere from one favorite to all six.
How often does the wallpaper change?
A new one shows on every new tab you open. You can also adjust brightness and blur, and fine-tune the clock card's glass blur, from settings.
Can I upload my own wallpaper?
Not yet. It is on the roadmap, the curated film collection is the whole experience for now.
Google sign-in
What does signing in with Google do?
It personalizes the greeting with your name and shows your profile picture. That's it. Your email, name, and picture are read once after you sign in and are not sent anywhere else.
Do I have to sign in to use the extension?
No, signing in is entirely optional. Every wallpaper, widget, and customization works the same with or without it.
Browser support
Does this work in Edge, Brave, or other Chromium browsers?
Chrome is the officially supported and tested browser. Other Chromium-based browsers may work since they share the extension platform, but they aren't actively tested, so treat that as best-effort rather than guaranteed.
Getting help
I found a bug, or I have an idea. What do I do?
Use the feedback form, no account needed. Bug reports, feature ideas, and wallpaper requests are all welcome, and everything is read.
Is this an official Makoto Shinkai or CoMix Wave Films product?
No. This is an unofficial fan project, made by fans, shared for free, out of love for the films. It has no affiliation with Makoto Shinkai, CoMix Wave Films, or any rights holder.
